Do you use affirmations, and do you use them effectively?

People use affirmations to inspire, motivate and energize themselves, and to keep their minds thinking positively. The process of repeating affirmations is similar to creative visualization, but words are used, instead of mental images.

Here are a few lines from a short post in the forum on how to use affirmations effectively:

How to Use Affirmations Effectively

“Affirmations can be very useful to counteract negative attitude, to motivate and inspire, to change your attitude toward situations, and consequently change and improve them.

In order to use affirmations effectively you need to:

1. Identify what attitude you wish to change, or where you need motivation.

2. Choose affirmations appropriate for the attitude or situation you wish to change.

3. Use the present tense in the affirmations.”

A visitor to the website has asked:
“Could you tell me if there are any direct affirmations pertaining to pure awareness?”

Pure awareness is a state of inner peace and happiness, without, or almost without any thoughts. In this state one is fully aware and conscious, but at the same time free from the compulsion of thinking thoughts.

Since this is a state without thoughts and beyond the “ordinary” mind, and affirmations are mental in nature, they are not adequate tools to promote pure awareness.

To experience pure awareness and to live in this state, other means are required, such as concentration exercises and meditation, or in some cases, the help of a spiritual teacher, who himself/herself lives in this state of pure awareness.

When a person repeats an affirmation, with which he is not in agreement, there is often a greater or smaller subconscious resistance, which defeats the affirmation. In cases of low self-esteem, difficult situations, failure or depression, the person’s mind is focused on his current situation, and finds it difficult, or almost impossible to think of a different, positive situation.

In such cases, which are quite common, when repeating a positive affirmation, a person says the words, but in his mind he sees his current negative situation. Furthermore, repeating the affirmations makes him more aware of his problems and how great is the discrepancy between his life and the affirmation. Since the mind is focused on the problem, and not on the positive affirmation, this aggravates the situation.

This does not mean that affirmations do not work; on the contrary, this shows that they do work. The person focuses the mind on the problem, not on the solution, and keeps thinking on the problem or negative situation, repeating it like an affirmation, and therefore attracts more problems or a negative state of mind.

For a person who is in a deeply negative mental situation, affirmations might not the right thing. They need other means to help themselves, such as psychological help. They also first need to gain more self-esteem and to strengthen their desire to help themselves.

In case of people who are naturally more positive, or when using affirmations concerning some goal one is positive about, affirmations would strengthen the desire and motivation to succeed.

In order to use affirmations one must have no doubts about his ability to achieve what he is affirming. If it were possible to see what is going in the mind of people who do and achieve things, we would see that they consciously or unconsciously tell themselves they are going to succeed. They use affirmations, often not knowing that they are affirming.

Tennis PlayerSomeone has asked me how to use affirmations for winning tennis matches.

“I have a question about power of affirmations. I play tennis, and try to apply it while, and even before I start playing the game, telling myself that “I will win this match” repetitively.

I have a moderate success with that, but I lose many times than I expect. I know my opponent is not a better player than I am. I practice a lot too. What do you think I should do? What kind of affirmations I should have?

Please also advise on how to phrase my affirmation. Should I say, “I will win all my matches”, or should I say, “opponent, you are losing this game”? Which is better?”

Here is my reply:
