The Social Network – The Movie About Facebook

Yesterday, I went to the cinema with my wife and kids to watch the movie The Social Network. It is a story about the creation of the social networking website Facebook, about the founders of Facebook, and about the lawsuits against its founder Mark Zuckerberg.

One night in 2003, Harvard student and computer programming Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, begins working on a new idea. Between blogging and programming, he starts something soon to become known as Facebook. Starting with no money, except some small amounts invested by his friend Eduardo Saverin, played by Andrew Garfield, he created a website that had members only in Harvard university, but soon included other universities, and then the whole world.

Finding ‘Me Time’

SeagullWhy a little selfishness is good for you – and for everyone else!

Have you invested any time on your own wellbeing lately?

Well, while I guess some will be able to say yes to that question, many others will be shaking their heads in disbelief. There always seems so much to do: work, partners, family and friends, and jobs around the home – all clamour for your attention, time and energy. And when it comes to deciding between yourself and others it’s no contest.

Negative generosity
Negative generosity? Can there really be such a thing? Well, while it’s brilliant to have a generous nature, only being able to say yes to requests for help, time or work.

One consequence of only being able to say yes is a feeling of not being in control. Another is that we find it almost impossible to engineer time out for ourselves – and when we do something inevitably crops up that seems ‘more important’. If we continue this way, then over time we become stressed, anxious, worn out and eventually resentful to those around us.

Yes, strange as it may seem, generosity of this kind can actually damage relationships! And as the receivers seem to just take it all for granted the over-generous giver becomes more and more tetchy in their giving.

Saying No
When people in this frame of mind do finally say no, it’s usually done in a temper, and often blurted out at the ones who least deserve it.

Take Time To Do Things You Enjoy Doing

Make a list of things you enjoy doing. This can be any simple activity, which you love doing, and that can be done in your daily life. Put in the list at least ten items, and then do something from this list every day. From time to time, as you discover more things that you like doing, add them to this list.

Some examples could be:

  • Taking a walk
  • Conversing with a friend that you like
  • Preparing a special dish
  • Eating a special meal
  • Reading a book
  • Taking a short nap at noon
  • Going to the movies
  • Meditation
  • Going to a lecture about a subject that you like
  • Eating out
  • Shopping
  • Painting
  • Playing with your kids
  • Walking on the beach
  • Swimming

Pasta Sauce Is Stronger than Steel

A few days ago I have prepared my own recipe of pasta sauce, and when I finished cooking it, removed it from the electric cooker and I put a lid on it, to keep it warm, because I had to go and bring my wife from the train station.

I went to change clothes, and then, just before leaving, I wanted to open the lid, but couldn’t, because the lid fit the pan so perfectly, not allowing the steam to escape, which prevented the lid from being opened.

Spirit of the Dance -The Irish Dancing Group

Last evening I went to see a performance of the Irish dance group Spirit of the Dance. As I understand, Spirit of the Dance is not one dancing group, but several groups under the same name, which are touring the world, and giving the same performance in various places around the world. Spirit of the … Continue Reading…
