When we planned for something and then a change of circumstance occurs, we can cater and change our plans/goals to suit our new plans/goals accordingly. If we never had plans/goals in the beginning, then certain doors of opportunity might not have come our way. That's why even small goals are important because it opens our awareness to opportunities. Even up to this day I still make a goal not to go to the junk food section in the supermarket. Such a small goal but it opened my awareness/doors of opportunity to a healthier eating habits, stronger will power and saving money :) Sometimes our goals will change and there is nothing wrong with that.
