Meditation is a technique for calming down the restlessness of the mind and awakening the spiritual consciousness. Regular practice brings inner peace, happiness and freedom from restless thinking. Meditation also relaxes the body and nerves, relieves stress and frees the mind from anxiety and worry.
In meditation you focus the attention on a certain thought, idea, sound or prayer for a certain amount of time. It usually involves turning the attention inwards, away from the external world, and when the mind wanders away, bringing it back to the meditation.
In it higher forms, meditation aims to free the mind from the subconscious compulsion to think incessantly, develop inner detachment and awaken the awareness of the Spirit within. Its regular practice awakens a new sort of consciousness, peaceful and blissful.
There are many forms and techniques of meditation. Some involve visualization and others the repetition of a mantra. Some involve focusing on a certain thought, sentence or idea, and other require focusing the attention on the breath, a candle or a certain shape. There are also meditation techniques in which you focus on the self within, and other requires the emptying the mind of all thoughts.
Broadly speaking, meditation can be divided into two main forms. One form requires thinking of some sort, such as focusing on a certain thought, and the other form requires inner silence and freeing the mind of all thoughts. The second form of meditation is more advanced in the sense that it requires a high degree of concentration, and is possible after training with the first form.
Some people, who know nothing about meditation, think it is a state of laziness and indifference and of mental dullness or unconsciousness. This is a totally erroneous point of view. Success in meditation requires at least some concentration ability, self-discipline, willpower and perseverance, and these are not qualities associated with laziness and indifference.
Regular practice of meditation brings deep positive changes in the behavior, thinking, state of mind and attitude. It develops tranquility, inner peace, patience and tolerance, increased self-mastery, discipline and inner strength, and the ability to focus the mind at will. It awakens an ability to deal calmly with problems and difficulties, avoid worries and anxieties and find solutions to problems.
For those who are serious and persistent, meditation can bring Spiritual Awakening and Self Realization.

I love your site. I found your blog via Google while searching for meditation techniques and your post regarding – Definitions and Benefits looks very interesting to me. It really looks very nice. The articles provided are long enough to provide great content but not so long as to be totally engrossing, if you know what I mean.

It is truly unfortunate that meditation has the reputation of being a practice of only the eastern religions. Meditation is for everyone and everyone can benefit. Whenever you are struggling with a decision take it to meditation. You may not get the answer in your meditation but keep aware after you have completed your meditation and the answer will come. Keep in mind it may not be the answer you want.
I practice Vipassana meditation, after starting my daily practice my life completely changed, it is still changing for good.
So regardless of the meditation technique anybody practice, the best thing is to do it daily and practice continuously, as it gives the best results.
