The Power of Attention – Focusing the Consciousness

In his book, Raja Yoga, Yogi Ramacharaka (William Walker Atkinson) says about the power of attention:

Power of Attention“The word Attention is derived from two Latin words “ad tendere,” meaning “to stretch toward,” which is really what attention is.

The “I” wills that the mind be focused on some particular object or thing, and the mind obeys and “stretches toward” that object or thing, focusing its entire energy upon it, observing every detail, dissecting, analyzing, consciously and sub-consciously, drawing to itself every possible bit of information regarding it, both from within and from without.

We cannot lay too much stress upon the acquirement of this great faculty, or rather, the development of it, for it is necessary for the intelligent study of Raja Yoga.”

“Attention has been defined as a focusing of consciousness, or, if one prefers the form of expression, as “detention in consciousness.”

“In the first case, we may liken it to the action of the sun-glass through which the sun’s rays are concentrated upon an object, the result being that the heat is gathered together at a small given point, the intensity of the same being raised many degrees until the heat is sufficient to burn a piece of wood, or evaporate water. If the rays were not focused, the same rays and heat would have been scattered over a large surface, and the effect and power lessened.”

The Lost Art of Solitude

“I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers.”
– Henry David Thoreau-

Solitude You don’t need to be a monk to find solitude, nor do you need to be a hermit to enjoy it.

Solitude is a lost art in these days of ultra-connectedness, and while I don’t bemoan the beauty of this global community, I do think there’s a need to step back from it on a regular basis.

Some of my favorite activities include sitting in front of the ocean, still, contemplating … walking, alone with my thoughts … disconnecting and just writing … finding quiet with a good novel … taking a solitary bath.

Don’t get me wrong: I love being with loved ones, and walking with a friend or watching the sunset with my wife or reading a book with my child are also among my absolute favorite things in the world.

But solitude, in these days as much as ever, is an absolute necessity.

The Benefits of Solitude

The best art is created in solitude, for good reason: it’s only when we are alone that we can reach into ourselves and find truth, beauty, soul. Some of the most famous philosophers took daily walks, and it was on these walks that they found their deepest thoughts.

My best writing, and in fact the best of anything I’ve done, was created in solitude.

Visualize and Achieve – Guide to Creative Visualization

By Remez Sasson

Creative VisualizationVisualize and Achieve is not a book about how to build and manage your business, how to manage your time, or how to invest your money.

This is a book about the essential ingredients of success – attitude, thinking, visualization, the subconscious mind, and other mental and emotional ingredients. It is a book about creative visualization – how to use visualization to create and attract success.

This is a book that explains some mental rules and teaches how to use them. It is a book that speaks about planting the seeds of success in your mind, watering them and growing them. It is a book about the powers within you that can repel or attract success, depending on the way you think. It teaches you about the powers of your mind, about visualization and about positive thinking.

Without a clear goal you cannot create anything of value. Success, any success, big or small, requires a clear mental image, strong desire, motivation, perseverance, faith, concentration, and a right attitude. This is a winning mentality, and this is what this book is about.

To visualize is to see what is not there, what is not real – a dream. To visualize is, in fact, to make visual lies. Visual lies, however, have a way of coming true.
– Peter McWilliams –

I have also included in this book exercises to sharpen the power of concentration and develop the imagination, so that you can visualize clearer mental images. Both concentration and imagination are essential tools for achieving success in every area, work, business, sports, writing, studying, school, the arts, relationships and everything else.

The book has been written in a clear, easy to understand and down to earth manner, which takes this subject out of the fogs of mystery and the supernatural, into practical and solid reality.

Finding ‘Me Time’

SeagullWhy a little selfishness is good for you – and for everyone else!

Have you invested any time on your own wellbeing lately?

Well, while I guess some will be able to say yes to that question, many others will be shaking their heads in disbelief. There always seems so much to do: work, partners, family and friends, and jobs around the home – all clamour for your attention, time and energy. And when it comes to deciding between yourself and others it’s no contest.

Negative generosity
Negative generosity? Can there really be such a thing? Well, while it’s brilliant to have a generous nature, only being able to say yes to requests for help, time or work is anything but. One consequence of only being able to say yes is a feeling of not being in control. Another is that we find it almost impossible to engineer time out for ourselves – and when we do something inevitably crops up that seems ‘more important’. If we continue this way, then over time we become stressed, anxious, worn out and eventually resentful to those around us.

Yes, strange as it may seem, generosity of this kind can actually damage relationships! And as the receivers seem to just take it all for granted the over-generous giver becomes more and more tetchy in their giving.

Saying No
When people in this frame of mind do finally say no, it’s usually done in a temper, and often blurted out at the ones who least deserve it.

Affirmations for Attracting Money

Affirmations for Money

Affirmations can help you focus your mind on money, motivate and inspire you to act and do something about having more money. They also help you become more aware of opportunities to make money.

The problem is that most people want money, but they:

  • Don’t feel they deserve money.
  • Don’t really believe they can make more money.
  • Are afraid to take the necessary steps to make more money.
  • Have low self-esteem.
  • Think negative thoughts that don’t let money come in.
  • Focus on their current financial condition, instead of focusing on how they want their financial condition to be.

Affirmations can help you attract money into your life. Affirmations combined with planning and action can work better and faster.

The real magic of affirmations is not repeating meaningless words, but repeating them in such a way that they motivate you to do things, inspire you, and open your eyes to see opportunities.

For affirmations to work, you need to affirm with faith and with the belief that what you are saying is already true. Just repeating the words with no faith and with no belief and waiting for miracles is not enough.

Feel the truth of the affirmation when repeating it. Let it inspire and motivate you. Keep an open mind and take advantage of opportunities that might pop up, and which can make the affirmation come true.

Affirmations are a great tool, but you need to back them up with positive action, persistence, and the willingness to pass through the doors that open for you.

Waking Up in the Morning in Time to Go to School

Are your children able to wake up early in the morning to go to school on time?

Often, during the summer holidays, children go to sleep quite late. Nowadays, children watch TV and play on their computers until the late hours of the night, and sometimes even later. Parents of teenagers often feel helpless, when their children turn the night into their day, and their day into their night. They go to sleep late and wake up late.

Now that the summer holidays are ending and the school year is beginning, children will need to wake up earlier. How are you going to deal with this? Some planning is required, as well as some degree of discipline and firmness.

Now is the time to start limiting the time for watching TV and playing on the computer. You, as a parent, have to draw limits and tell your children to switch off the TV and the computer at hours that you decide about.

It would be a good idea if the hours of going to sleep and waking up were changed gradually and not abruptly. Each day your child should go to sleep a little earlier and wake up a little earlier. If you send your child to sleep several hours earlier than he or she became used to, they will fight you and not accept this. They will also find it difficult to fall asleep. This is more so with teenagers.
