Napoleon Hill was born on October 26, 1883 and passed away on November 8, 1970. He was an American author, who was one of the first authors who wrote ans publicized the connection between success and the powers of the mind. His most famous book is “Think and Grow Rich. which is one of the best-selling books of all times.

Napoleon Hill wrote about the power of belief and faith, and the role they play in achieving success. One of his most known saying is, “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

His formula for success, as taught in his book “Think and grow rich”, is followed by many people who have read his book. This book, and the other books he wrote, are still popular today, and are still exerting a great influence on the mind of the people who study or write about creative visualization and the law of attraction.

Napoleon Hill began his writing career at age 13 as a “mountain reporter” for small town newspapers and went on to become America’s most beloved motivational author. He dedicated many years of his life to define the reasons why people fail to achieve financial success and happiness in their life.

The turning point in the writing career of Napoleon Hill has occurred in 1908 with his assignment, as part of a series of articles about famous men, to interview the billionaire industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who at the time was one of the most powerful men in the world.

How to Increase Willpower

The word willpower is often associated with losing weight, quitting smoking, bodybuilding, or studying. However, it is an important skill, which necessary in all walks of life, such as in sports, achieving goals, self improvement and in meditation. It is a skill well worth developing.

It is said that the imagination is stronger than willpower, and that what you imagine over and again, eventually, affects your subconscious mind and turns into a habit. This is true, but when you possess willpower you can tell your mind what to think and what to imagine, and you can insist on acting in a certain way.

Without willpower, you just let passing thoughts and whims dictate to you what to do. By building willpower, you gain the ability control your imagination. 

Willpower helps you focus your mind on the goal and hold it there, without being sidetracked. How can you succeed, if you keep changing goals or changing your mind?

How do you go about building and increasing willpower?

You can do so by training and developing this skill through special, simple exercises.

Pleasure and Happiness

Pleasure is a state, in which you feel good and enjoy what you are doing. Usually, it does not last long, as the attention moves to other subjects, and because life is such that you have always other things to do, like work, cleaning the house, driving somewhere, interacting with other people, etc.

When you eat some delicious food you derive pleasure from it, but the pleasure doesn’t last for long, since you cannot go on eating indefinitely, you finish eating the food on your plate and the sensation of pleasure wears off after a while. You may enjoy watching a movie, but the movie lasts for a certain amount of minutes. When you read a book that you enjoy reading, ultimately, you reach the last page.

As you see, all pleasure is time limited.

Pleasure is usually awakened by external stimuli, and is largely physical, involving the five senses, like the smell of good food or its taste, a pleasant breeze, or of the sight and physical contact of a certain person. You can also derive pleasure from reading a book or daydreaming.

Pleasure is emotional in nature, while happiness is a state beyond the emotions and even beyond the mind. In pleasure the emotions and feelings are active. While in a state of happiness there is calmness and peace.

Though happiness is similar to pleasure in some respects, yet it is different.

Happiness does not depend on external stimuli, since it comes from within, though quite often, it seems as if the source is external.

Living in a Noisy Environment

Inner PeaceSomeone has emailed me the following question:

“I understand it is important to own your mind, but what if you live next door to really noisy people who drive you crazy and make you lose you sleep?”

“I cannot help thinking that the people who write these books have big detached houses so they already have a peaceful environment at least.”

It is not always possible to be in control of your environment, and therefore, it is not always possible to live in a peaceful environment. However, you can teach yourself to ignore noise and distractions. This is possible, and I know this from personal experience.

On the plus side, learning to calm down your mind in an environment that is not quiet, and striving to ignore the noise and distractions, helps you develop your inner strength. In this process, you gain inner power, will power, self discipline and a sense of satisfaction.
