Every learned skill requires continued training to keep it in shape, though you never forget it completely. It just gets weaker. It is like learning to speak a foreign language, to swim or ride a bicycle and then not using or improving this ability or skill. The ability gets weaker, but you don't forget it or lose it completely. It is the same with concentration. To keep your concentration in shape and improve it you need constant training. This should be approached with interest and love.

If you are persistent with the concentration exercises and also practice meditation, you might reach a point when you can silence your mind at will and without effort. At this point, inner peace and inner silence will become your natural and habitual state of mind, and you will be able to focus your mind on anything, anytime and anywhere.

I love the comment by Remez Sasson! I have had similar experiences and was taught by a personal friend of Mouni Sadhu. Unfortunately, What Mouni Sadhu said in his book, "In Days Of Great Peace" is true: that if you stop doing the concentration exercises the abilities you have acquired will gradually fade away. My abilities to concentrate have faded over the years from not doing the exercises and now I need those abilities very much. I have to start over from the beginning and it's not easy.
