How to Increase Willpower – Tips for Building Willpower

Willpower is often associated with losing weight, quitting smoking or sitting down to read and study. Actually, it is useful and necessary in all walks of life, in sports, achieving goals, self improvement and in meditation. It is a skill well worth developing.

It is said that the imagination is stronger than willpower, and that what you imagine again and again, eventually affects your subconscious mind and turns into a habit. This is true, but when you possess willpower you can tell your mind what to think and what to imagine, and you can insist on acting in a certain way. Without willpower you just let passing thoughts and whims dictate to you what to do. By building willpower you gain the ability control your imagination.

Willpower helps you focus your mind on the goal and hold it there, without being sidetracked. How can you succeed, if you keep changing goals or changing your mind?

So how do you go about building and increasing willpower?
You can do so by training and developing this skill by special exercises.

Here are a few tips and strategies for building and increasing willpower:

Do a little more
Read one more page before you close your book.
Wash one extra plate when you wash dishes.
Walk another two minutes when doing your daily walk.

Respect your decisions
When you decide to do something, do it. Don’t procrastinate or change your mind.

Do things differently
Don’t be a slave to your habits. Do differently things that you always do in the same way. Seek more creative ways to do things in your everyday life.

Be committed
When you start doing something that can improve your life, be committed to go with it to the end.

Make laziness your trigger to doing things
Regard laziness as an opportunity for building willpower. If you do not succumb to it, you increase your willpower.

What you can do once, you can do always
If you can avoid a bad habit once, in time you will be able to overcome it completely.

Start again and again
Building your willpower is not achieved in a day. You need time to overcome habits of many years. No matter how many time you fail, start again.

Seek supportive friends
Seek to be in the company people who are positive and motivating.

Don’t quit
Remember, failure is not the sign to quit, but the sign to begin again. Strong people with strong willpower are not dismayed by failure. They start again, with even more desire and ambition.

When healthy eaters choose broccoli over a Butterfinger, they use a small region in their brains that indulgers don’t use.

That bundle of cells is a clue to the biology of willpower, a new study finds. Like a wagging finger in our heads, the region admonishes us to consider long-term benefits over instant rewards when we make decisions.

“This is the first time people have looked at the mechanism of self-control in people who are making real-life decisions,” said Todd Hare, a Caltech neuroscientist who led the study.

To zero in on the nodule that imposes willpower, Hare and his colleagues scanned the brains of 37 people who called themselves dieters. During the scans, the subjects pored over 50 photos of foods. They rated the foods according to taste and healthiness.

Some foods, such as Wheat Thins and granola, earned strong “neutral” marks in both categories. For the final test, scientists showed each volunteer a food that they had labeled “neutral” and asked them to choose between it and each of 49 other foods.

I have read articles about willpower that describe it as a sort of temporary burst or spurt of desire or motivation. I have also found articles that discredit and reject it as a myth or nonsense. I disagree with these description and definitions, because willpower as I know it, is something completely different.

Sometimes, due to anger, dissatisfaction or some other emotion one manifests some degree of willpower, and then he is temporarily capable to do things that ordinarily he does not or cannot do. True willpower is something different. You cannot rely for inner strength on temporary flashes of emotion or motivation. You need something more permanent and reliable, which you can count on in times of need.

This power has nothing to do with clenching your fists, holding your breath and straining your body. It is not a physical power, but an inner power. When well developed, it can turn into a habit, and be manifested whenever required for any length of time.

Willpower is an ability, a skill that can be developed and strengthened like any other skill. It is like learning to speak a foreign language, and then being able to speak it whenever you need it. It is like exercising your body, which then makes you healthier and stronger and able to do things that require physical strength.

Willpower can be developed through simple, special exercises, and when well developed, it manifests naturally, almost effortlessly whenever it is required.

Forget about your concepts and beliefs about willpower. It is often misunderstood and thought to be a myth or something unattainable. This is due lack of understanding of what it is, and because of the inability or failure to use it. In order to use it effectively in times of need, you need to strengthen it, in the same way that you strengthen the muscles of your body.

Often, when you have to do something that requires willpower, it will not be so easy to manifest it, especially if you are lazy or there are obstacles on your path. On the other hand, if you train and exercise it often, in small, not so difficult matters, you will have it available and ready to use when you need.

You can train your willpower through special, simple exercises, and by using it on a daily basis in the small things of daily life. Cleaning the dishes now, instead of later, eating one slice of cake, when you desire two, getting off the bus one station before or after your destination are good and simple examples of exercises you can integrate into your daily life. Every act or exercise strengthen and accumulate this power, so that you would be able to use whenever you require it.

There is no need to tell you how important is to develop willpower, and how useful it is for success in every area of life, whether it is business, studying, self improvement or spiritual growth. When developed, it becomes a habit, a second nature, and can be applied to every task, chore or goal.

It is the tool we can use to defeat discouragement, laziness and procrastination, and is the companion of persistence, willpower and self disciple. It is the inner strength that keeps us on the track toward our goals.

Quotes on determination

Here are few quotes on determination from various sources:

Decision and determination are the engineer and fireman of our train to opportunity and success.
Burt Lawlor

A failure establishes only this, that our determination to succeed was not strong enough.
John Christian Bovee

If I had to select one quality, one personal characteristic that I regard as being most highly correlated with success, whatever the field, I would pick the trait of persistence. Determination. The will to endure to the end, to get knocked down seventy times and get up off the floor saying, “Here comes number seventy-one!”
Richard M. Devos

Determination and perseverance move the world; thinking that others will do it for you is a sure way to fail.
Marva Collins

We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history.
Sonia Johnson

Don’t be afraid to give your best to what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.
Dale Carnegie

Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.
Newt Gingrich
