A simple meditation technique
Meditate like Oprah (or learn this generic meditation technique)
Oprah was excited to learn Transcendental Meditation, brought to the western world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Then she paid to have 250 of her employees learn the technique!
I personally love this technique. Here’s a link to the Transcendental Meditation website. http://www.tm.org/.
However, here is a generic quick way to learn a simple meditation technique right here & now!
Step #1
Sit quietly and comfortably, in a chair with feet on floor, or sitting cross-legged (Indian-style).
Step #2
Close your eyes and breathe normally.
Step #3
Think of a mantra or word that feels good, but to which you have no highly emotional attachment.
Some suggestions: Peace. Calm. Shree Ram or Jay Ram. (Sanskit phrases in the chant: Shree Ram, Jay Ram, Jay Jay Ram Oh) Choose the one – or another word – to use as your ‘mantra’. (Ram is usually pronounced Rahm.)
Or you can use the following, which I understand is the most-used mantra in Buddhist tradition: Om Mani Padme Hum
Om Ma Ni Pad Me Hum
(ohm mah nee pahd may hum)
Step #4
You’ve chosen your mantra. Now sitting quietly and comfortably with your eyes closed, begin to silently repeat your mantra. Another way to put it is “Think the mantra”.
With no tension, no trying to correlate your mantra with your breathing, no trying to say it at a certain speed, just think the mantra, gently focusing on it in your mind.
Do this for approximately 10 minutes.
If your body gets uncomfortable, move to a more comfortable position.
No judgment. No worrying if you are doing it ‘right’. You are!
You will have many thoughts. Your mind will wander. Do not worry. That is your normal human mind doing its thing. When you notice it wondering, that is your clue to simply, easily, without judgment, bring your thought back to your mantra. Start repeating it again as you gently focus on it.
If this simple meditation technique resonates with you, enjoy.
