How to Strengthen Your Willpower - Tips and Advice
By Remez Sasson
Everyone needs willpower. It is a skill we all need, but how many try to strengthen it?
You can strengthen your willpower, in the same way that you strengthen your muscles, by training and exercising.
No, it is not tough and difficult. It can be fun, and it is most rewarding.
An effective way to build your willpower muscles is to do whatever task or chore you have, immediately, without procrastination, and regardless of how you feel at that moment and what you might be doing.
You might feel lazy, and try to postpone carrying out the task for some other time. This is the exact and right time to ignore the objections of your mind and set out to carry the task.
I am not speaking of some major task. This could be just washing the dishes, emptying the garbage can, sitting down to prepare for an examination or fix something at home.
The right way is to start small. If you are not trained and strong enough, and want to lift 50 KG you will fail, but if you start with only two or three KG, with training, you would gradually be able to lift 50 KG.
So it is with willpower. As you work on increasing it, gradually, you would have more strength, and be able to do greater things.
There are various ways to boost and increase your willpower. This skill is useful for bodybuilding and for excelling in sports. It is useful for losing weight, becoming assertive, carrying out decisions, being a leader, or achieving success.
Don't try to quit smoking or starve yourself to death in order to lose weight quickly, because it probably won't work. You don't have yet enough "willpower muscles".
Start with small and simple tasks, and gradually, you will be able to accomplish greater tasks.
People want fast results, especially in this age of the Internet, computers and smartphones. The attention span has become short and the patience level is small. People say, "If I don't get it now, I won't try."
They expect to quit smoking now, lose weight now, and get rich now. That's not the right attitude if you want real results.
If you try to accomplish a big task quickly, you would probably fail and then quit what you tried to do, with the belief that you can't do it.
There are all kinds of products and methods that promise instant success with no effort, but not everything is like preparing instant coffee. Can you learn to fly a plane, build a bridge or become a successful writer, instantly or in 10 days? Everything worthwhile takes to grow, prepare or make.
How to Build up the Willpower Muscles?
Start with small and not so important tasks. This is like lifting two or three KG. You lift more weight when you buy groceries or hold your baby. This is something you can do.
Simple Example to Boost Your Willpower:
If you feel thirsty or need to go to the bathroom when you are watching TV, don't tell yourself, "I'll wait until the commercial break". Decide to get up now and go to drink or go to the bathroom. Show yourself that you can, even if what you are watching is interesting. That's not difficult and does not require physical effort.
This, and similar exercises, train your willpower muscles. The more you practice the easier it becomes, and then you will be able to do easily greater things that now seem impossible.
Gradually, you'll find yourself taking on bigger tasks and actions to build your willpower muscles, and you'll be successful at doing them. Soon, things that are impossible now would become possible and within your reach.
When Is the Best Time to Work on Increasing Your Willpower?
Any time is okay, whenever there is some task or chore to carry out, at work, at home, or at any other place. Any time you are not motivated, procrastinate or feel lazy is a good time to get up and do what you need to do.
Don't overthink. Stop thinking and act. And remember to start small.
You would be surprised at how great you feel after each time you exercise your willpower. You would be surprised to see how fast your willpower grows, and how easy it would be to use it whenever you need it, for small tasks and for big tasks and goals.
