One of the primary obstacles to success is the lack of a definite aim – knowing what you want to achieve or attain. The lack of a definite aim results in either doing nothing, or starting one thing and then quitting and starting something else. This kind of behavior doesn’t lead to success. You can achieve more and better results when you define your goal, big or small, and work toward achieving it.

You cannot get anywhere, if you don’t know what you want. Many start in one direction without much thinking, but after some time realize that they don’t really want what they have been pursuing, and switch to something else. If you don’t know exactly what you want, you cannot attract it into your life.

One focused on a definite goal is like a person who sees his destination at the end of the road, and walks straight toward it, while one without a definite goal doesn’t know in which direction to go, and either stands still in one spot, or keep changing directions, and consequently wasting time and energy and getting nowhere.

Aiming at a definite goal is like focusing the lenses of a binocular or a microscope. You need to focus the lenses in order to see clearly, because otherwise you will see a blurred image. It is the same with visualization; you need to focus on a clear aim in order to attract it into your life.

It is usually not so simple to define goals, and most people don’t really know what they want. You need a clear and detailed mental picture in order to focus and direct your mental energy toward the realization of your goal. To do this, you need to know exactly what you want, and not behave like a blindfolded person standing at a crossroads not knowing which direction to take. Only when you know both the destination and the direction you can proceed in the shortest and most direct way.

Clarity of purpose is important for the achievement of success and for making dreams come true. Your dream or goal must be specific and clear and not not something vague. While it’s fun to dream about being rich and successful, you have to know and define what you really and truly want to get or achieve. Clarity of purpose is important for any success, for losing weight, getting a new car or travelling abroad. If you don’t know exactly what you want, how can you get it?

When there is clarity of purpose you know what steps to take. With clarity of purpose you focus on the goal, without wasting time or energy. Clarity of purpose is like focusing a strong source of light on your goal, so that you see it clearly.

  8. Be specific as to color, size, quantity, shape, place, etc, of what you want to get or accomplish.
  9. Learn to focus your mind on your goal.
  10. Remove clutter from your life.
  11. Display perseverance and some self discipline in your life.

Making your sales goals in a good year is one thing, but attaining them in a difficult year is an entirely different challenge. Putting aside the common clich? that when times are tough, great salespeople are made, the reality is that making your goals puts more money in your pocket. Therefore, I keep reminding salespeople to think of how many times in the past they’ve watched a customer materialize out of nowhere only to become a major player in helping reach their year-end objectives. If you’ve been in sales for any length of time, you’ve had this happen. I am not advocating that you kick back and relax while you wait for the big customer to appear. I understand that it takes work to make your goal, but, at the same time, don’t lose sight that occasionally nice breaks do occur. The good news is that you can be successful if you’re willing to take the time to work through the following steps, despite the current state of the economy.

The first step to help you make your sales goals in a tough economy is to break down your goal into weekly objectives. Keep in mind, however, that these should not be based on closing “x” number of sales, but instead on accomplishing “x” number of activities that you’ve found are critical to your success. When your goals are strictly measured in terms of sales dollars or units, you can easily become dejected by numbers you’re not happy with. Activities to monitor may include making prospecting phone calls, conducting customer presentations, or having follow-up meetings. This breakdown strategy is similar to the way coaches successfully motivate their teams. By dissecting the game into a series of activities that the coach knows the team can accomplish, they will be in a better position to win the game.

All of us have goals, even if we don’t consider them as goals. A goal need not be something big and spectacular. Not everyone wants to become a millionaire, own a company, become a businessman, a politician or a famous actor or singer. Most people want just a happy and comfortable life, and their goals are therefore ordinary and simple ones.

Most people want to find a good job, keep their current job, and be promoted in their current job. There are people whose goal is to go to college and graduate. Others wish to travel abroad or take a vacation. Some desire to find love, and others want to be healthy. Building a muscular body, learning to swim, learning to speak a foreign language, or just the desire look and dress good are also goals.

Even the desire to have enough money to shop, to have fun or make life more comfortable and enjoyable are goals.

Most of these goals are achievable and within reach, and can fill most of our time. When fulfilled, we either try to repeat them again and again, or move to other similar sized goals.

You see, even if you think that you don’t have any goals, you actually have them and work toward achieving them.

How can you increase your chances of success? Planning ahead, using affirmations and visualization, and being focused, open-minded, patient, self disciplined, motivated, ambitious and positive increase your chances of success.

Imagine someone could grant you three wishes, what would you choose?

Would you ask for the first thing that comes to your mind, or would you give it deep thought and make a wise choice? Or maybe you know exactly what you want, and don’t even have to think about it?

It is a difficult question if you are vague about what they really want. Actually, most people don’t have clear goals, while those who gained great success knew exactly what they wanted and saw it clearly in their minds. Without setting clear and definite goals you will not be able to focus your energies and not accomplish much, so the first step for success is to know exactly what you want.

This is a difficult task for most people. Many go through life where it takes them, lacking any direction. They find it difficult to arrive to a clear understanding of their abilities, what they are best suited to do, and what they really desire to do with their lives.

You need to look inside you for the answer. Sit down everyday with a pencil and paper, where you won’t be disturbed, and write down all the ideas that come to your mind. Analyze every desire, its pros and cons, and whether you really want it achieved. You will be surprised how many ideas, which look plausible at first, turn to be futile and useless goals after a little thinking.

Don’t despair if you don’t find anything that really interests you. Just keep thinking, writing down and analyzing your ideas day after day. Even if you don’t find what is most important for you after a few days, a week or more, the understanding and insight will gradually unfold to you.

Remember, even small goals are goals. One of the reasons people find it difficult to decide about goals is because they believe they have to choose something big, and this frightens them. They might be afraid of the big responsibilities that come by pursuing and achieving big goals, and prefer to lead a simple, ordinary life.

When looking for your real and true desires, don’t just think about the wealthy and famous people you see on TV or read about in the newspapers. Not everyone wants or attains fame and power. Achieving smaller goals on a personal and more mundane level might be what want or prefer, and that’s quite okay.

You should be clear about your goals and ask yourself the following questions:

Upon achieving this goal, would I be happy and satisfied?
What will it solve in my life?
What will be its effect on my life?
What will be its effect on other people?
Do I really ant to achieve it?

After finding what you want and being sure about it, try to see how you can make your goal a little bigger. Don’t limit your thinking, because whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can eventually accomplish. For example, if your goal is a good and satisfying job, think about something bigger and believe you can get it. If you desire to a certain amount of money, and you feel mentally comfortable with it, try thinking about a larger amount. If your goal is losing a certain amount of weight, try getting your mind comfortable with the idea of losing a little more, provided of course you don’t harm your health, and so on and on.

After setting clear and definite goals you will certainly know what are your three most important wishes. You don’t need to ask for a genie to grant them, because you have within you the power to make them come true. This is the power of your mind, expressed through visualization and affirmations.

Remember, what the mind can conceive and believe to be possible, it can eventually achieve.
