Tips for MeditationThere are a lot of factors that do not allow a focused, deep, and disturbance-free meditation. However, there is a lot you can do to avoid disturbances and obstacles to a better meditation.

I am not going to take about the benefits of meditation in this article. I have already written about this topic in another article.

In this short article I have collected a few tips to improve your meditation experience. If you have been learning to meditate, I am sure you are already familiar with these tips, but it is always good to be reminded again and again.

When you know something, it doesn’t mean that you use this knowledge, and therefore, it is a good idea to be reminded often.

Questions About Lack of Focus and the Chatter in the Mind

Thinking and Lack of FocusI receive a lot of mail each day from website visitors. Some of them send me a mail, thanking me for the information at the website, and some asking questions concerning self-improvement, personal problems, meditation, motivation, creative visualization, and other related subjects.

I try to read all the messages, and if I can help, send a reply, or refer the person who asked the question to one of my articles.

If you have a question, read through the website, before emailing me, since the answer is most probably already there.

There are website visitors, who send very long emails, but since I have other things to do, such emails are either not read, or read only some time later. Short mails are always preferred, and they receive a faster response.

Many of the questions I receive concern concentration, focus and the inner chatter that goes on in the mind.

People are worried about their concentration and want to improve it. They tell me that they are unable to concentrate at work or when they study. They tell me that their mind wanders, and they find it difficult to fix it on one thing.

How Many Thoughts Does Your Mind Think in One Hour?

Do you know how many thoughts your mind thinks each hour of the day?

Experts estimate that the mind thinks between 60,000 – 80,000 thoughts a day. That’s an average of 2500 – 3,300 thoughts per hour. That’s incredible.

Other experts estimate a smaller number, of 50,000 thoughts per day, which means about 2100 thoughts per hour. This too, is a great number of thoughts.

If you were able sell each thought, you would be rich in no time.

Did you notice what kind of thoughts do you think?
If you pay attention to these thoughts, you would be amazed to discover that most of them are useless, unimportant thoughts that pass through the mind with a huge speed. These are words you repeat in your mind, comments the mind makes, repeating what you heard said, questions, answers and a lot of senseless wandering thoughts that you might not even be aware of.

You might not believe that you think these huge quantities of thoughts, but if you have experience with meditation, you would have proof of the great number of thoughts passing through your mind. It’s just like being a very busy train station or airport terminal, where a great number of people come and go.

Is Your Mind Always Somewhere Else?

The number one rule of success is to focus on what you are doing. If you are not focusing on what you are doing it means:

  • You don’t really care about what you are doing at the current moment.
  • You have problems on your mind, which take away your attention.
  • You allow other thoughts, other people, and external factors distract your attention.
  • You have no control over your mind.

When you are doing something, anything, is your mind focused on what you are doing, or do you daydream or think about something else?

Is your mind always somewhere else? If it is, you are not putting forth your best. You are not acting efficiently. You are telling your subconscious mind, people and the Universe that what you are doing at the present moment is not important, and does not deserve your and their attention.

Will This Year Be Different from the Previous Year?

Will this year be different from the previous year?

Maybe it will and maybe it won’t. To a great extent, this depends on you. It depends on how you think and what you do.

Your external life is shaped by your thoughts and by your attitude. The movies, and the images you keep playing in your mind, to a large extent, shape your life, your circumstances, and the situations you go through.

Everyone plays movies in their mind. Often, these are the same movies and images repeated every day, and they are either about your current circumstances, or about problems or “negative expectations”.

If you don’t change the movie and images, and keep looking at them, nothing will never change. The same kind of life will keep repeating itself. You have to change the movies in your head, in order that your life changes.

Do you make New Year resolutions, only to quit them after a week or two?

By making New Year resolutions you start playing a new movie. However, after a week or two, you remove the new CD from the player in your mind, and insert again the old CD, about the same life you had until now. Then, nothing changes, and your life will repeat itself more or less the same the next year, and then the year after.
