How to Consciously Manage Stress

Manage Stress

Stress is a common occurrence in most people, especially during the last few years. In fact, 68% of individuals reported heightened stress levels during the pandemic, according to the American Psychological Association.

Stress can make everyday activities difficult to manage; for example, stress and anxiety can prevent you from relaxing during a dentist visit, and may cause you to miss the appointment altogether even if you’re in dire need of a checkup.

Here are a few ways to consciously manage your stress so it doesn’t hinder your journey toward achieving holistic health:

Engaging in Regular Exercise

One of the most effective ways to fight stress is to keep the body in motion. You may think of it as intentionally causing physical stress to decompress feelings of anxiety and stress.

This is primarily because exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, known to improve mood and relieve pain.

Additionally, exercise is highly effective in improving the quality of your sleep, which is commonly worsened by increased stress levels. Working out also helps increase your self-confidence.

When you feel better about yourself, your mental well-being improves as well.

Use Essential Oils

Using essential oils can help you calm your nerves and help you get better sleep. Some of the oils that you can use for calming are lavender, bergamot, vetiver, ylang-ylang, and frankincense.

These essential oils can be diffused, but they can also be incorporated in scented candles.
Studies have shown that getting into aromatherapy can help decrease anxiety levels.

Try Keeping a Journal

There may be times when you will feel like your emotions are taking over your life. You can consciously fight the feeling by writing things down.

While you may be tempted to only jot down what’s causing you stress, it would be a better idea to write about the things that you are grateful for.

Taking a positive approach would help refocus your energy. Plus, it will help you keep your mind busy thinking about good things in your life.

Reach Out to People

Often, people bogged down by stress may choose to become a recluse or stay away from their support system. This makes it more difficult for them to get out of the situation they are in.

It’s okay to reach out to others to prevent yourself from drowning deeper into your emotions.

Spending time with people, particularly friends and young children can help stimulate the release of oxytocin, the hormone responsible for relieving stress.

Learn to Say No

Some stressors may be beyond your control. However, there are some things that you can control. You have to learn when to put your foot down and say no.

Remove anything that’s causing you stress and preventing a happy life. This is pretty common when you’re at work. When you’re getting bogged down by tasks, don’t take more than you can handle. Choose only those that you are comfortable working on.

Take it Day by Day

While there may be activities that you can do to de-stress, there may be deeply rooted anxiety that you need to work on for a longer period. Don’t rush, and take it day by day.

Focus on what you can take on each day. Get into a routine that will help you prioritize everything that you have to do. This way, you can have extra time to focus on yourself.

Stress and anxiety can be debilitating. Don’t let them take control of your life. Choose an activity that you can stay committed to for a higher chance of success.
